Te Ahu a Turanga Noho Marae

Description:  In week 7, we had an overnight stay at the local Marae in Woodville.  We were immersed in Maori culture and participated in a range of activities. I went to the Inter School Swimming Sports and we had really good results. I think we all did really we. We set two goals to focus on during our stay.\

Big Idea:

1.  Did you achieve your goals?  How do you know? I achieved my goal and I know that I did because I ate all the food and my plate was squeaky clean. I know that I was ready for Inter School Swimming Sports because I was ready and organised. I also did not forget anything.

2.  What are you most proud of from the marae stay and why? I am pleased with myself because on the second day, me and a team of swimmers we went to the Inter School I was really pleased with my results.

3.  What challenged you the most and why? Getting a good result in the swimming because the people I was versing were really challenging.

Transformation

We have been learning about transformation.  We have specifically learnt that...

  • translation is when an object slides in any direction;

  • rotation is when an object is turned around a central point;

  • reflection is when an object is flipped and has a line of symmetry.

Our challenge was to design a car badge that contained at least one of these aspects of transformation.

Big Idea:

Feedback/Feedfoward: My feedback is that you put in something about what you like which in this case you put in dog paws. My Feedfoward is next time you could put a different transformation.
(Serena).

Evaluation:I think my car badge looks great. My thoughts for next time would be to choose a different transformation. I really like my dog paws though. Before I thought that my paws were reflection but then I looked at it again and figured out that it was translation. Without the colours and the dots I figured that it would be reflection and translation as well. (Rosalind)

Do Not Pick on People By Rosalind

Purpose: create a story to share orally

Description: Oral storytelling is a Maori tradition. We have been planning our own story to tell on the Marae in Week 7.

Here is a video of me peforming my storytelling. Click the link and have a look. (👀)

Evaluation: I think I did a a good job. I could maybe be a little more confident because at the Mari I stood up and performed my story and when I was trying to do crowd participation everyone laughed at me. I felt like people did not think I was confident standing up there either. I do need to stay in character as well. When people are laughing I sort of changed my voice from the chracter to the monkey. Next I need to remember that I am performing in front of people instead of showing that I can make a fool of myself. I also felt pleased that I stood up and showed my story to people.

Big Idea: We have been preparing for the Mari. We have been learning to tell stories like they did in vintage days.

Success Criteria:

  • Between 1 and 2 minutes long

  • Using your voice to make sounds effects

  • Using your whole body to make actions

  • Use your face to tell a story through facial expression

  • Knowing the story, knowing the setting

  • Get the picture into your listener’s head

  • Stay in character - keep your composure.

  • Audience participation

  • Unique and original (Hook your audience)

Star Test

Description: At the start of the year we always do a star test. We did one this year as well. I think I did pretty well but I think I could have done better as well. Here is a picture of my test.

Goal: Expand Vocab

Big Idea: The way that I could achieve my goal is when I do not know what a word means then I can look it up on the dictionary by using Dictionarys, Thesauruses,Glossaries and tools. I will know when I have achieved it when I do not have to look a word up when I am reading because I will already know what it means. I would like to complete the goal by the end of this term. I have to know what the word means by understanding the story and fitting the word in with how the story goes. For example their and there. I have to know which one it is before going and looking in the Dictionary or Thesaurus.

Telling Stories

Dscription: We are learning to tell stories by using facial expressions and acting the character out. Here is a question that I would like to answer by making a story.

Big Idea: Why do birds have feathers not skin or fur?
